Back to the Middle Ages
The location of Oprtalj
Oprtalj is a typical medieval "mountain town" north of Motovun. It's actually more of a small village. The Romans founded the city as a way station between Italy and Poreč. In fact, Oprtalj is one of the oldest towns in Istria. Although this somewhat sleepy place has lost much of its importance, it still has the charm of a living museum. Walking around here you can imagine what life was like in the Middle Ages.
The sea is only 20 km away, so you can reach it by car in about half an hour.
Trieste, Italy, is 35 km from our house, the Slovenian border about 10 km.
Facilities in Oprtalj and surroundings
In Oprtalj there are a few places to eat and drink, such as an enoteca with regional products (truffles, wine, olive oil and the like) on the inner square, just in front of our house entrance.
There is a typical regional restaurant (konoba) on the large square in front of the loggia. The spacious terrace under the chestnut trees, with a view of the beautiful area, invites you to linger. It really is one of the most beautiful places in Istria, where it is pleasantly cool even in summer. Here you can enjoy typical Istrian, home-made dishes. In the immediate vicinity (a few kilometers away) there are other restaurants where you can eat well.
Oprtalj also has something to offer for children. There is almost no traffic in the small, bumpy streets and children play in the streets. A public playground and a boules court are located in the village. There are some children who are multilingual (English, German, Dutch, Italian).
